What happens in a comprehensive eye exam?

Unlike a vision screening or other general eye tests, a comprehensive eye exam evaluates the health of the entire eye. Getting your eyes checked every 1 to 2 years—starting as early as 6 months old—is important, because:
Eye and vision development need periodic monitoring to ensure they are on track.
Many diseases—eye and otherwise—can occur without warning signs; having regular, comprehensive eye exams often are the first way chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes are detected.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring:
A list of all the prescription- and non-prescription medications you take, including dosage—this will help your eye doctor determine any vision risks you may have.
Your most recent pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses, if you have them.
A copy of your vision insurance card and other medical insurance cards.
A list of questions or concerns about your eyesight.
What does a comprehensive eye exam include?
A comprehensive eye exam takes about an hour and may include:
Dilating your pupils with drops so the doctor can see inside your eyes
Testing with eye charts to determine the sharpness of your vision
Checking visual acuity (how well you are able to identify details)—this is generally done with charts like the Snellen eye chart
Checking for common eye diseases like glaucoma (note: we have a “no puff” testing machine!)
Checking your color vision (color blindness)
Checking your depth perception
Assessing how well your eyes work together (or not, in the case of lazy eye)
Evaluating your eyes as an indicator of overall health
Determining if you need a prescription for vision correction
What happens after the exam?
Following your exam, you will have the opportunity to choose frames, if applicable. An optician will be available to assist you in selecting a pair that best fits you and your lifestyle. If you choose to wear contact lenses, you will need to schedule a contact lens fitting appointment.
Once your new eye wear is ready to be picked-up, the optician will adjust your frame to fit and be comfortable for everyday wear.
